Announcing my 10 week course in GCSE chemistry

Hi all! This September, I will be starting a 10 week course to help you with GCSE chemistry. If you are around St Albans and would like to join it (places are limited!), then let me know! Contact details are on the flyer. The outline is below...

This course will go into depth on the first four topics taught in AQA GCSE chemistry. There is a lot of content to cover and take extra time to fully understand it after learning about it for the first time. This course will help deepen your knowledge and understanding of GCSE chemistry and help you answer the exam question that will arise based on these topics.

Lesson 1 – maths skills for science

  • You will learn the SI units that are used in science.

  • You will learn what prefixes you use for units and how to convert between them.

  • You will learn how to use an appropriate number of significant figures in calculations.

Lesson 2 – separating mixtures

  • You will learn how to separate an insoluble solid and a liquid.

  • You will learn how to separate a soluble solid and a liquid.

  • You will learn how to separate two liquids.

Lesson 3 – atomic structure

  • You will learn about the structure of an atom and the gold foil experiment.

  • You will learn how to work out the electron configuration of an atom.

  • You will learn how to use the periodic table to work out the number of protons, neutrons and electrons in an atom.

Lesson 4 – trends in the periodic table

  • You will learn how the periodic table evolved.

  • You will learn the trends in reactivity in groups 1 and 7.

  • You will explain the trends in reactivity in groups 1 and 7.

Lesson 5 – ions

  • You will learn why atoms form ions.

  • You will learn how to work out the electron configuration of ions.

  • You will learn how to work out the formula of ionic compounds.

Lesson 6 – covalent bonding

  • You will learn which substances form covalent bonds.

  • You will learn how to draw the electron configurations of covalent substances.

  • You will learn how to draw different representations of covalent substances.

Lesson 7 – properties

  • Explain the properties of ionic, covalent and metallic substances.

  • Explain the properties of graphite.

  • Know what affects the properties of a substance.

Lesson 8 – Relative mass calculations

  • Know how to work out mass number.

  • Know how to work out the relative atomic mass of an element from the mass of its isotopes.

  • Know how to work out the relative formula mass of a compound.

Lesson 9 – moles

  • Know how to work out the number of moles of a substance based on its mass.

  • Know how to work out the concentration of a solution in g/dm3

  • Chemistry only – know how to work out the number of moles of a gas based on its volume.

Lesson 10 – Equations

  • Know how to balance an equation

  • Know how to balance an equation using number of moles.

  • Know how to work out the mass of a product based on the mass of the reactant.

  • Know the effects of limiting reagents and excess reagents.
